Open Research and the Digital Scholar: Noelle Cowling, University of Stellenbosch


     
     Keynote speaker at CPUT's Teaching and Learning with Technology Day 2013,  Noelle Cowling,  provided an overview of current and emerging technologies applied by scholars in the research field. Emphasis was placed on the researchers’ online identity and the aptitude to effectively advance the research and the resulting impact of the research.  View her screencast on Open research and the digital scholar






    Below are some tools that can be utilized to create a professional online identity 

  •     Twitter:-An online social networking and microblogging service that enables users to send and read "tweets", which are text messages limited to 140 characters.
  •    Academia.edu : A social networking website for academics. The platform can be used to share papers, monitor their impact, and follow the research in a particular field.    
  •     SlideShare: A Web 2.0 based slide hosting service. Users can upload files privately or publicly in the following file formats: PowerPoint, PDF, Keynote, or OpenDocument presentations
  •    LinkedIn: A social networking website for people in professional occupations. It is mainly used for professional networking.

Our Head of Campus, Dr Yolande Magerman,  has recently published an article in the International Journal of Africa Nursing Sciences (IJANS). This achievement not only reflects her personal dedication to advancing nursing knowledge but also highlights the growing research impact of the Western Cape College of Nursing (WCCN). Telling stories differently: engaging 21st century students through digital storytelling

Penny Gill and I were honoured to be part of a team that published a book Telling stories differently: engaging 21st-century students through digital storytelling(DST).  Published by Sun Media the book evolved as a collaboration between  Janet Condy, an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), and CPUT academics to capture their research projects using DST.  The purpose of the book is to share a collection of studies using DST as a pedagogical tool in CPUT.  The book was launched on Thursday 3 September 2015 at the International RASA and Pan African Literacy Conference in the Baxter Hall.
